Couple Goals – 5 Tips For Couples Who Want To Get Healthier Together

Living a healthy lifestyle is something many people have a hard time embracing because they feel as if they’re denying themselves their favorite foods. However, the truth is that eating a healthy diet and getting plenty of exercise doesn’t have to be unsatisfying. On the contrary, the culinary world is vast and exciting, and believe it or not, we can learn to love different foods because our tastes do evolve.

Studies show that couples who strive to get healthy together are more successful than those in which only one partner is trying. If you and your partner want to start down a path to a healthier existence together, give the following tips a try.

  1. Get Creative and Explore the Possibilities

If you or your partner are picky eaters, try giving new foods a go. As stated earlier, our tastes can and do evolve as we explore new foods. Start by getting a good non-stick cookware set, and look for recipes that use foods you’d like to try. For instance, the tang of a ripe mango is exquisite, while the nuttiness of whole grains is delicious.

If you find it difficult to embrace new foods, try a new twist on something you enjoy. For example, if you adore baked potatoes with globs of full-fat sour cream and butter, try topping it with low-fat sour cream or Greek yogurt instead. Alternatively, consider trying a different potato with a flavor all its own, like new potatoes or Yukon golds, which have a naturally buttery flavor.

  1. Work Together for the Good of the Team

Getting healthy as a couple is a team effort. Nagging and chastising rarely ever work to motivate anyone. Instead, let your partner know that you’re with them every step of the way as you work together to reach your health goals. When your partner achieves even the smallest of victories, you both win. If you work together, you’ll motivate each other and be the support the other person needs when the going gets rough.

  1. Avoid Negativity and Be a Positive Force for Each other

Instead of telling your partner what they should and shouldn’t be doing, give them support and information. Let them know how much you’re looking forward to spending many more healthy years together, and if you see them struggling, give them gentle guidance with helpful information to move forward. Ask your partner if there is anything you can do to make it easier for them, and let them know how proud you are of their progress. You can expect the same kindness and consideration to flow back to you in return.

  1. Get Rid of Unhealthy Snacks

It’s difficult to be healthy when the house is filled with nutritionally empty snacks. Get rid of these temptations, and fill the house with healthy snacks you both enjoy. If your partner simply can’t tolerate broccoli, don’t force it. There are plenty of other veggies that will provide the same nutrition.

  1. Take the Journey One Step at a Time

Don’t look at getting healthy as a penalty. Instead of saying, “I’ll never have pizza again,” consider swapping out the thick base and processed pepperoni for healthier alternatives. Take it one step at a time, and revel in the small accomplishments each day brings. When your clothes fit better and you feel stronger and more energetic, you’ll find it less difficult to stick with a healthy lifestyle.

Getting healthy is as much a mental battle as it is a physical one, but when you do it together, you’re far more likely to succeed.
