There is a gap between health and fitness

According to the World Health Organization, health is “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease and infirmity”. 

  • Health – A state of optimal health, not just the absence of illness.
  • Fitness – The state of being physically fit.

However, that doesn’t tell much. Dan John defines fitness as the ability to perform a specific physical task. Professional athletes must have different fitness abilities than the general population. For a living, professional athlete depends on their fitness. They make less money if they don’t win a game or an event.

For those not genetically gifted, not squeezing our knees and backs after a hard workday defines being fit.

Different strokes are used for different people.

The ideal state of health and fitness varies from person to person. You might be able to lift weights at the gym, and on others days, your back is sore, and you cannot move.

The relationship between fitness and health

Being healthy and being fit go hand in hand. You can move more if you are healthy, which will help you improve your fitness. You’ll be healthier if you get fit. This can mean losing weight, building muscle and improving your health markers such as blood sugar and cholesterol.

Being physically fit doesn’t mean you are a fitness. Someone can look healthy and fit, but they may not be. Some people look healthy but can still do incredible things.

Figure contestants are a good example of this distinction. The contestant will have lost significant body fat to appear a certain way on the competition stage.

They appear to be very fit and strong, despite their exterior appearance. Unfortunately, the methods required to achieve this look aren’t long-term.

If you take nutrients out of your body and force the body to burn body fat in a specific way, it can cause hormonal imbalances that can play tricks on your mind.

Let’s take a look at diets for a second. Extreme diets include the Twinkie Diet and the McDonald’s Diet, where people lose weight and improve their health by eating foods that are not healthy.

Weight loss is all about calories. As long as you are in a caloric deficit, you will lose weight. But what about people losing weight, eating unhealthy, and becoming healthier?

Get Fit Through the Right Methods

While health and fitness are often paired together, there is a gap. You can be fit even if you aren’t physically healthy. People can also look good by engaging in harmful activities.

Some people look healthy but aren’t fit. Because health and fitness go beyond skin, external appearances can be deceiving.

It would help if you did not depend on extremes to attain long-lasting health and fitness. Stick to proven methods of eating balanced meals and exercising. Fitness and health are not for a specific race but all of us.
